Flapjack recipe with chocolate covered crickets

By Cecilia Urbano, 10/12/2024

Flapjacks are traditional English treats made with rolled oats and golden syrup. They are a simple, quick, homemade dessert, perfect even for children, as oats are a cereal rich in iron and B vitamins. Ideal to enjoy with a cup of tea or as an irresistible snack!

Here’s our recipe, enhanced with chocolate-covered crickets, adding an extra boost of energy and flavor to this delightful treat.

Let’s have a look at the ingredients:

            150 g butter

100 g brown sugar (preferably dark brown sugar)

3 tablespoons honey or maple syrup

            250 g rolled oats

            100 g chocolate covered crickets

Process:

  1. Prepare the baking pan: Line a square or rectangular baking pan (about 20×20 cm) with parchment paper and preheat the oven to 180°C (350°F).
  2. Melt butter and sugar: In a saucepan over medium heat, melt the butter along with the brown sugar and honey (or maple syrup), stirring until the mixture is smooth and fully combined.
  3. Add the oats: Remove the saucepan from the heat and stir in the rolled oats. Mix well until all the oats are coated with the buttery mixture.
  4. Mix in the chocolate chips: Let the mixture cool slightly for a few minutes, then gently fold in the chocolate covered crickets. This will prevent them from melting too much.
  5. Spread in the pan: Pour the mixture into the prepared baking pan and press it down evenly using the back of a spoon or a spatula.
  6. Bake: Bake for 20-25 minutes, or until the edges turn golden brown.
  7. Cool and slice: Allow the flapjack to cool completely in the pan, then cut it into bars or squares.

Tips:

For a sweet-and-salty twist, sprinkle a little coarse sea salt on top before baking.
